It saddens me to know that such a great man has passed. My thoughts and prayers are with the Byrum family and closest friends. I had the pleasure of meeting him and had the honor to give him thank-you notes from all the recipients of his scholarship. During that event, we had a great talk and I like to believe that he enjoyed my company and our talk as much as I did. As a recipient of the Byrum Scholarship, I have had the wonderful opportunity to attend Wake Forest University. Without his help and generosity, I would have never had the experience, education, the chance to succeed nor the ability to achieve my goals as I did here. I hope that I can do the same for others as he did for me in the future. Thank you Mr. Byrum, may you rest in heaven.

Although I never met Mr. Byrum, he has had an enormous impact on my life. He made everything I enjoy and take for granted day to day as a Byrum Scholar at Wake Forest possible. I’ve grown and learned in ways I could never have expected thanks to the opportunity I was offered by Mr. Byrum. I will never forget what he has offered me. My thoughts and condolences to his family.

  4. Marcus Guerrero

My thoughts and prayers extend out to Mr. Byrum’s family. I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Byrum but from what I’ve read and from what others have told me, he was an incredible man and someone that everyone looked up to. People like him don’t just grow on trees. I am also a recipient of The Byrum scholarship. Without this generous scholarship, I would not be able to attend this university. Thank you so much to Mr. Byrum for this once in a lifetime opportunity because it has changed my life forever.

All of my thoughts and condolences are extended to Mr. Byrum’s family during this time. I cannot thank him enough for giving me the gift of an education at Wake Forest University. I would not be where I am right now if it weren’t for his generosity, and I wish more than anything that I could attend. Rest in peace, Mr. Byrum, and I hope the best for his family members.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Byrum’s family. On the one occasion I met Mr. Byrum he talked to me about how all students should have the opportunity to become a ‘Wake Forest Man’. I am forever grateful that he gave me that opportunity and with each day I spend at this school I strive to be a Wake Forest Man and Byrum Scholar he would be proud of. Mr. Byrum has done incredible things for this community and I would not be able to attend Wake Forest had it not been for his generosity,

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of such a generous and caring man who will be missed dearly. Mr. Byrum’s contributions to Wake Forest University have positively impacted so many lives, and I am very grateful to be one of those affected. The Byrum Scholarship has provided me with the opportunity to attend my dream University, to study abroad, to foster a sense of community on campus and in Winston-Salem, and to grow and develop through my experiences at Wake. I cannot show enough appreciation and gratitude for Mr. Byrum’s extreme generosity and belief in my education and aspirations. May his legacy and spirit live on through all the lives he has influenced and inspired.

I can honestly say that Mr. Byrum’s passing has come to me as very sad news. Although I have never meet Mr. Byrum, he has made an incredible impact on my life. If it were not for his generous scholarship at Wake Forest I probably would not have been able to attend the university. Knowing that Mr. Byrum has this scholarship in place for students says so much about his character and not only am I thankful for his generosity, but the community of Wake Forest is also thankful. Thank you so much for believing in students such as myself and providing us with a chance to dream and achieve our goals. My condolences goes out to the Byrum family.

Because of Mr. Byrum’s generous contribution to Wake Forest University, I have been able to attend the college that has now become my home — an opportunity that I would not have gotten without his kindness. Over the past three years, I was blessed with the opportunity to meet Mr. Byrum on two occasions. Each time his warm smile gave away his congenial and caring nature, as well as his true love of Wake Forest, a community who will truly miss him. I express my sincerest condolences to his family and friends and wish that they would know that Mr. Byrum’s spirit will continue to live at Wake Forest, among the faculty, staff, alumni, current students and those yet to come.

I just want to express my greatest gratitude to Porter Bynum and his family for the gift that they have given me. Without this scholarship I would be unable to pursue an education at Wake Forest University or anywhere else. My condolences and well wishes to the Byrum family.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Byrum’s family. I unfortunately never had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Byrum but I’m so thankful for this generous scholarship that has allowed me to attend Wake Forest University. The experience and knowledge that I’ve gained from being at Wake is like no other. Therefore, my success here is due to Mr. Byrum, who believed in giving. With his scholarship I hope to in the future be able to pass it forward and give back in the way he has done. I will forever be grateful and remember his generosity for the rest of my life. 12. Spencer Sullivan

As a recipient of the Byrum Scholarship, I cannot show enough gratitude for what Mr. Byrum has done for not only this beautiful campus, but also to the students who are able to appreciate its beauty. Sadly, I was never able to meet him and show how appreciative I am. However, I will always remember how he impacted my time here, allowing me to grow and thrive in this amazing atmosphere only Wake Forest provides. Thank you Mr. Byrum.

  13. Laura Miller

It saddens me to hear of Mr. Byrum’s passing. Not only did his tremendous generosity allow me to attend law school at Wake Forest, I was also fortunate enough to spend time with Mr. Byrum and Ms. Thomas on a few occasions. Mr. Byrum’s love of Wake Forest was genuine and plainly evident. He was always warm and happy when I saw him,, and I remember thinking that he was experiencing the perfect capstone to an incredible career of service. I was inspired then, and remain inspired now, by his humility and character. So many have been touched by his generosity; his mark on Wake Forest will be long lasting. Thank you, Mr. Byrum, for what you did for me, my friends, and so many others.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Byrum in person a couple of times through my cousin who knew him well. He was sharp as a tack and full of life and had plenty of interesting stories to tell. What I admired most about him is that, despite his success and wealth, he never forgot his humble beginnings nor did he forget how thankful he was to have received an education. He lived a modest lifestyle filled with simple pleasures and because of his success and a big heart, he made sure others might have an opportunity to go to college as well. His financial generosity was simply amazing! He was a tough old bird and they simply don’t make models like him very often. He will forever be an inspiration to those he touched. Rest In Peace Mr. Byrum.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Byrum. My time at Wake Forest would never have been possible if not for the incredible generosity and passion for education that Mr. Byrum so freely and magnanimously shared with others. I can only begin to imagine the number of students and families who have been touched by Mr. Byrum’s generosity over the years. I am happy to say that I will be working in Admissions at Wake Forest once I graduate this May, and each day when I walk through the doors of the Porter B. Byrum Welcome Center, I will look up at Mr. Byrum’s name and say a quick thank you to an incredible man. Mr. Byrum’s legacy will live on through all of the students who begin their higher education journey in the building bearing his name.

  16. Laurel Hagaman

I did not have the opportunity to meet Mr. Byrum personally; however, I am incredibly grateful for his support of myself and countless other students in their academic pursuits. My experience at Wake Forest was made possible by the Byrum Scholarship, and I could not have pursued my dream of attending Wake Forest without his generosity. Thank you, Mr. Byrum, for representing Pro Humanitate and changing the lives of many. My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.

  17. Mariweir Harris

Although I never got the chance to meet Mr. Byrum, he has given me the opportunity for me to attend Wake Forest University through his scholarship fund. His generosity has presented me with an opportunity I will forever be grateful for because without it I would have never become the person I am today. I can only express endless gratitude for his contribution to my future, and to so many others. I send my condolences to his family and friends. Thank you.

  18. Caleb Woody

My attendance at Wake Forest has been the most defining aspect of the man I am today. That being said, Mr, Byrum is the reason for my success, for my education, and for the man I have become. Being a Byrum Scholar is a badge of honor I will proudly wear while at Wake Forest University. My only hope is that I will one day be as successful as he, and touch the lives of just as many young men and women with my generosity. Thank You Mr. Byrum, everything I do and am capable of is because of you.

  19. Nikki Manoussos

My condolences. What an incredible man. Donating scholarships and buildings to help youth succeed is such a thoughtful act. Thank you.

  20. Josiah Low

I was a recipient of a Byrum Scholarship without which I would never would have been able to attend Wake and grow to become the person I am today. Although I never was able to express my gratitude in person, I am indescribably thankful for the gift he has given me and will remember his generosity for the rest of my life.
