I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Byrum in person a couple of times through my cousin who knew him well. He was sharp as a tack and full of life and had plenty of interesting stories to tell. What I admired most about him is that, despite his success and wealth, he never forgot his humble beginnings nor did he forget how thankful he was to have received an education. He lived a modest lifestyle filled with simple pleasures and because of his success and a big heart, he made sure others might have an opportunity to go to college as well. His financial generosity was simply amazing! He was a tough old bird and they simply don’t make models like him very often. He will forever be an inspiration to those he touched. I am happy to say that I will be working in Admissions at Wake Forest once I graduate this May, and each day when I walk through the doors of the Porter B. Byrum Welcome Center, I will look up at Mr. Byrum’s name and say a quick thank you to an incredible man.
